I really enjoyed my second year
serving Hanwell as a Carnival representative, this time as Queen. We had so
many functions/events from the all important trip up to London to get the
dresses, to photographic sessions with local photogragher Gordon Outhwaite -
who had our portraits hanging in his shop window for a year, then we very
generously received them (still have both of mine). We had of course to attend THE CARNIVAL, and others, shows, fairs, Wimbledon Speedway and much more. Our local vicar was Fred Seecombe (brother to Harry) who resided in the vicarage at the top of my road and who also attended some local events - he is sitting on the stage with us in one of the photos (I also have one of him and the 3 of us). I also did a sponsored swim for the Leukaemia Research - 20 lengths in 20 minutes at the old Ealing Swimming baths - now the Town Hall car park! On the Carnival that year the Press said 15,000 attended, again we were lucky with the weather, 50 side shows and stalls filled the park, The Queen's Regiment was also there with a cardboard tank - not being able to get a real one through the gate! One lucky family - Mrs Hazxel Bowles of St Margret's Rd, Hanwell, her son Tony and his aunt Lillian all won 2 bottles of sherry, 1 bottle of wine, 4 cans of beer, 2 bottles of vodka and 2 jars of pickles on the tombola! Wonder if they ever went on to win the lottery? Hayley Ingram of Carr Rd, Northolt won the bonniest baby competition. The Polski Fiat car was won by Peter Brooker of Home Farm Rd, Hanwell. In my time you had to be between 17 and 24 to enter, if my memory serves me right. Hence we could attend events such as the pub in Southall. We also had some wonderful prizes - I learnt to drive with the driving lessons, the flowers and many more..... My time with the Hanwell Carnival really gave you confidence and was a good spring board into adult life. The only time I could not attend some of the functions was when I had to go into hospital to have some wisdom teeth out, and on those occasions usually ex Carnival Queens/Princess would stand in for you. Hope it goes on for many more years.......... Cheers Sally See Sally's photo's HERE |
