Fancy dress Procession Started at 11.00am from Hanwell Community Centre to Elthorne Park.

Hanwell Carnival opened this summer's season of dazzling events in the London Borough of Ealing with a whole day filled with fun and excitement for all the family. We had over 10,000 visitors to the Carnival last year and this year's topped that to a massive 15,000! There was a vibrant and varied programme, including live performances from local bands, food and craft stalls as well as a fun fair.

The Carnival is organised by a group of resident volunteers called the Hanwell Carnival Committee. The Carnival raises money for local charities and community voluntary groups.

Entry to the carnival is always free. Programmes were £1 and came along with a free entry to a prize draw which includes a top prize of £500 in John Lewis vouchers. The winner Mr Allen Wellington of Hanwell was delighted and is looking forward to a spending spree in John Lewis. There was a free goody bag too for the first 1000 visitors.

HANWELL'S ROYAL FAMILY
There was special guest appearances by Hanwell's own "Golden Girls", the Carnival's past and present Carnival Queens and Princesses.

May Nuthall (then May Bramwell) was 20 years old when she became Hanwell Carnival Queen in 1962 and she can't wait for Carnival day when all the celebrations begin. Now 68, and living in Sandhurst, May has fond memories of Hanwell carnival. She can also recall when Hanwell Broadway was the place to spot celebrities out and about! The late Adam Faith, was a 60s heart throb, singer and actor and was regularly in Hanwell to visit a guitar shop on Hanwell Broadway. May says "We used to spot him now again from the hairdressers where I worked. Other visitors also included band members from the Who. I was an apprentice hairdresser at Jeneens Hairdressers on Hanwell Broadway for 5 years during the 60s before I got married and moved away to Sandhurst. Spotting people like Adam Faith walking down the high street was really exciting! I enjoyed living in the Hanwell area and still come back at least 3 times a year to visit friends. It will be really great to meet up with the other 'royals' and being a 'Golden Girl' for the day! "

WORLD OF FOOD
There was an array of food stalls from around the world to tempt carnival goers including traditional English dishes as well as Indian and Caribbean food.

World renowned flautist Keith Waithe will featured on the music stage as well as Hanwell's rising young teenage stars "The Grifters" from Elthorne Park School in Hanwell. The Grifters performed edgy contemporary songs and music.

The dog show is an established part of the carnival. It's a fun talent show for dogs where visitors can showcase their pets with the X factor!

Louise says "We always enjoy coming to Hanwell Carnival and running the shows. Hanwell Carnival hosts one of the best annual talent shows in London mainly because of the great atmosphere created by visitors and their pets.

Fancy Dress Procession
Procession organiser Jim Wong said - "We had lots of enthusiastic local community groups which included schools and charities taking part in the procession and they made this a very special occasion. It was a spectacular event as we are mainly a "Green" walking procession. Groups included Drum Carib on wheels, The Little Art Room, Hobbayne Primary School, Oaklands Primary School and 203 Brentford Army Cadets.

Hanwell Carnival Queen & PrincessThe procession was led by this year's carnival Queen, Gemma Sanders, 18 and Princess, Grace Barrett, 11. They traveled in style in a locally restored luxury Railton classic car which is worth over £1m.

There were lots of other surprises in the procession too, including stilt walkers dreseed as an England footballer, a butterfly and a clown!

Background to Hanwell Carnival
Hanwell Carnival is believed to be the oldest carnival in London. It was revived in 1961 after a gap of nearly 25 years by world renowned circus showman Billy Smart. He had links with Hanwell and was president of the carnival that year paying for the spectacular firework display which rounded off the evening. Hanwell Carnival is supported by major sponsors Ealing Borough Council, The John Lewis Partnership and Westside Radio. Hanwell Carnival was originally set up in 1898 (see the ) and was revived after the Second World War in 1961. It is believed to be the oldest Carnival in and around London. This year is our 50th successive year and we are planning an extraordinary Carnival to celebrate on 19th June 2010.

Hanwell Carnival exists to provide an opportunity for local charities and voluntary groups to fund raise and was originally founded to raise money for Hanwell's Cottage Hospital long before the NHS was created.
